Ramadan: The Month of the Qur'an
A Season of Faith, Mercy, and Spiritual Renewal
All praise is due to Allah who has allowed us to reach the month of Ramadan the month of mercy, forgiveness, and freedom from the Fire. It is a month distinguished by a great honor, the revelation of the Qur'an. Allah says: "The month of Ramadan is that in which the Qur'an was revealed."
1. Ramadan is truly the month of the Qur'an
In it, our connection with Allah's words is renewed, hearts are purified, and souls are elevated. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was most generous in Ramadan, and he would review the Qur'an with Angel Gabriel every night during this month, demonstrating the great status of the Qur'an in Ramadan.
He (peace be upon him) also gave glad tidings to those who fast, saying: "Whoever fasts Ramadan out of faith and in hope of reward will have his previous sins forgiven." (Narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim)
This means whoever fasts believing in its obligation and seeking reward sincerely from Allah, his past sins will be forgiven. What a tremendous encouragement to make the most of its days and nights. Surely winning the side of Allah remains the hope of every Muslim.
2. Our beloved Prophet Mohamed (peace be upon him) and the Righteous Predecessors with the Qur'an in Ramadan
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had a special relationship with the Qur'an during the month of Ramadan. He (peace be upon him) would review the Noble Qur'an with Gabriel every night of Ramadan, going over what had been revealed to him. In the final year of his life, he reviewed it twice. This indicates the recommendation of increasing the recitation and study of the Qur'an in Ramadan.
The righteous predecessors also paid great attention to the Qur'an during Ramadan, devoting most of their time, may Allah have mercy on them, to its recitation and reflection. They understood that Ramadan is not a month of food, drink, and late-night entertainment, but a month of worship, prayer, Qur'an, and spiritual striving, a month for disciplining the soul and nurturing the heart.
3. Ramadan: A Spiritual Station for Turning Back to Allah
Ramadan is a precious opportunity for sincere repentance, self-reflection, and renewing one's covenant with Allah. It is a spiritual station where believers increase in piety, learn patience, refine their character, and purify their hearts from heedlessness.
In Ramadan, the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are chained creating a blessed atmosphere that encourages the servant to turn to Allah with humility and devotion.
4. Seeking Laylat al-Qadr: A Chance for Immense Reward
Among the greatest blessings of this month is Laylat al-Qadr about which Allah says: "The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months."
It is a night in which the angels descend with mercy and peace, and acts of worship performed during it are better than worship of more than eighty-three years. Our beloved Prophet Mohamed (peace be upon him) encouraged seeking it during the last ten nights of Ramadan, especially the odd-numbered nights. He also taught the supplication: "O Allah, You are Most Forgiving, and You love forgiveness, so forgive me."
It is a tremendous opportunity to multiply rewards, have sins forgiven, and elevate one's rank.
Ramadan is not merely days that pass it is a divine season. Whoever welcomes it properly and makes the most of it will attain success in this life and the Hereafter.
Let us make the Qur'an the spring of our hearts and seize the opportunities of fasting, prayer, supplication, and charity hoping to be among those accepted.
May Allah allow us to reach Ramadan, assist us in fasting, praying, and reciting the Qur'an, and make us among those freed from the hell Fire.
